Could I Have Chagas?

Most people in the U.S. are not at risk for Chagas disease. However, you may feel perfectly fine even though the parasite is living inside you. The only way to tell for certain is to get tested for Chagas disease. To see what your level of risk is, try our quiz.

Some groups who may be at risk and should get tested are:

  • People who have spent more than 6 months living in a Latin American country where Chagas disease is present, especially in a rural area
  • Hunters and others who spend substantial time camping or being outdoors in the southwestern or southeastern United States
  • Relatives of people who have already been diagnosed with Chagas disease
  • People who have been bitten by a kissing bug should get tested – but please note that in most cases a kissing bug bite will not cause the infection
